Maggie B. Covington,
MD
Dr. Covington is a family physician who
has practiced Integrative Medicine since completing
residency in 1989. This
is a form of medicine that emphasizes the importance of
addressing the whole person – body, mind, and spirit –
including lifestyle, and makes use of both conventional and
alternative therapies.
Dr. Covington received her medical degree
from Howard University College of Medicine and completed her
training in family medicine at the University of Maryland.
She has completed additional training in nutrition,
spiritual healing, medical acupuncture through the Helms
Medical Institute and UCLA, and functional medicine (an
approach that assesses the patient’s underlying
physiological and biochemical imbalances that contribute to
illness, and individually tailors therapies to restore
health and improve function). She has held academic faculty
positions at Howard University College of Medicine,
University of Southern California, and is currently
Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of
Maryland, School of Medicine. She is course master for an
elective course on complementary and Alternative medicine
for 4th year medical students.
Beyond providing general preventive care,
her particular areas of interest include the assessment and
treatment of hormonal, nutritional, and neurochemical
imbalances manifesting as chronic fatigue, anxiety,
depression, pain, weight gain and loss, PMS, menopausal
symptoms, and gastrointestinal problems.
“I believe
that the body has an innate ability to heal. Disease occurs
when the body’s natural mechanisms for healing are
overwhelmed, worn out, or lack the necessary nutrients and a
healthful environment. My goal is to help each patient peel
back the layers of their symptoms to find the underlying
triggers and imbalances that caused those symptoms in the
first place. True healing can occur when we ask the right
questions, individualize treatment by providing each patient
with what his or her own body needs, and when the doctor and
patient work together in a relationship of trust,
commitment, and optimism.”
