What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is the art and
science of keeping the nervous system functioning at its
best. The nervous system is the “master system” of the body
and includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves going from
the spine to the rest of the body. The nervous system
controls and coordinates other body systems, keeping them
balanced and functioning well. It is a complex system of
communication from the brain to the rest of the body and
back again.
The objective of chiropractic care is
to correct areas of the body where the nerves have become
pulled or pressed upon, leading to distorted or disrupted
messages. Chiropractors examine the spine and other joints
for evidence of these distortions, also called “nerve
interference” or “subluxations.”
Chiropractors correct nerve
interference by “adjusting” the vertebrae or other joints
back into position, freeing up the nerve flow, establishing
proper communication again. This is similar to re-setting a
breaker switch in an electrical breaker box.
The benefits of chiropractic care are
far reaching since the nervous system is important for the
functioning of the entire body. However, it is most known
for relieving head, neck, and back pain and for helping
people move about their daily activities with more ease and
comfort. Many people also experience better posture,
greater energy, and an improved sense of well being with
chiropractic care.
CranioSacral Therapy
Just as we have a normal rate in which we breathe, a
normal pulse, and a normal blood pressure, we have a normal
“cranial” rhythm. CranioSacral Therapy is based on
detection and gentle balancing of this rhythm, which is
produced by the flow of fluid in the central nervous
system. This fluid flows within the head, down through the
spine to the sacrum and back up in a continuous cycle,
nourishing the nervous system and taking away waste
products. It helps the brain and nervous system to function
properly. Restrictions in the body structure (muscles,
connective tissue, and joints) can disturb the flow of this
fluid, causing pain or dysfunction. These restrictions can
be caused by birth trauma, macro or micro trauma, or
stress. CranioSacral Therapy releases these restrictions,
using a very gentle hands-on approach. The pressure used
in treatment is about equal to the weight of a nickel.
People often notice an improvement in overall body function
and a feeling of deep calmness and relaxation with
CranioSacral Therapy. Other benefits include less neck,
back, and headache pain, relief of chronic conditions, and
increased energy. CranioSacral Therapy may also promote
fine motor skills, oral motor skills, developmental skills,
overall functional skills, attention/focus, and reduce
tone/stiffness (in spastic muscles) in children. It may
also enhance and support occupational and speech therapy. |
